September 2014

Hello 2016-ers!

Welcome back!  I hope that you had a great summer:  you played, rested, slept, did one or two really wacky things, etc….  Now that you’re back, you will most likely spend some time catching up with friends, sharing stories, telling everyone about the wacky thing(s?) you did.  more>>

YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I helped the first year students move in.  I have done this every year, except for one.  It is so much fun to be a part of the excitement and to watch the faces of the students - some with a "deer in the headlights" look - and their parents - a mixture of sadness and delight that their student is now in college.  Just two years ago, you were in the same situation. I am sure I helped some of you move in.  more>>

Career Services

It’s your third year. Welcome back!

This is the year to get serious about seeking out leadership roles on campus, gaining experience through internships and research projects, and conducting informational interviews with professionals working in your field of interest—beginning with Trinity alumni. To get started, we in Career Services recommend attending events such as Networking Etiquette on September 15 and Making Connections on September 18.

Visit us in person and visit us online at http://tigerjobs.wordpress.com/. We look forward to seeing you.

APPly Yourself! Volunteer Awareness Week is occurring September 2-5 with many activities planned on how YOU can engage with the San Antonio community through community service. The week involves the TUVAC Extravaganza with all TUVAC programs from walking dogs to playing with children recruiting volunteers for the year. On Wednesday a Super Nacho Hour will feature the Volunteer Fair where over 20 area non-profits will be present to recruit. Some non-profits present will be San Antonio Sports, City Year, after-school programs, and much more. The week concludes on Friday with excursions to a Habitat for Humanity build and volunteering at the San Antonio Food Bank. Several activities are planned by APO, HOPE Hall, TUVAC, CCI, Career Services, and the Trinity Cat Alliance. For more information, visit www.trinity.edu/communityservice.

Meal Plans -- Do you need to change your meal plan?
Send an e-mail to reslife@trinity.edu with your name, student ID number and the name of the plan you want and they will make the change. The last day to change a meal plan is the last day of Add/Drop which is Thursday, September, 4, 2014.

20th Annual Hallympics
Get ready to celebrate the 20th year of Hallympics.  Come and compete for the illustrious title of Hallympics champion!  Residence halls compete against one another in a series of physical and intellectual events.  The games begin on Sunday, September 7 and will run through Thursday, September 11.  Grab a hall-mate and head to the fields.  You don’t want to miss this Trinity tradition!

Juniors,

One of the coolest perks of being a junior is the First Friday Breakfast. Every first Friday of the month, juniors and seniors get FREE breakfast tacos, coffee, and juice in Heidi Lounge from 7:30 – 10:30 a.m. All you have to do is show up – no strings attached.

August 2014

Hi 2016-ers!
I wish you an early ‘welcome back!’  As you get back into the swing of things here on campus, I would imagine a number of you are growing more excited about your majors.  Many of you declared your major last semester, and the rest of you (I hope!) will declare this semester.
In all of the excitement of delving more deeply into your area of specialization, I would like to remind you that one of the highlights of a Trinity education is the Common Curriculum.  This is the means by which, regardless of your individual areas of interest, Trinity ensures that you are well-rounded men and women with a grounded grasp of our diverse world.  This is your opportunity to explore, follow a whim, see how others think and believe, and expand your horizon.

After you’ve caught up with friends after a summer apart, revisited favorite haunts in San Antonio, and refreshed your memory about the quickest ways to skirt campus construction, I encourage you to take a moment to look at your upcoming coursework this semester.  You might find it incredibly beneficial to give some thought to how your Common Curriculum courses might be useful to you in your planned major, in the life you envision after your Trinity career, and in your life as an educated member of society.

Hope to see y’all around campus!

Cheers,

To the Class of 2016,

Welcome back!!!  I hope you had a great summer and are now charged up for another fantastic year at Trinity.  Hi, my name is Kim Pettit, and I am your new alumni sponsor.  I look forward to meeting you.  I probably have already met some of you at the Ice Cream Social (“Meet Me in the Middle”) or other events.

I graduated from Trinity in May 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration.  While at Trinity, I participated in several intramural events and was an astronomy lab assistant for several years.  My mother was the librarian in charge at the Great Hall.  After graduation, I went straight to law school at St. Mary’s Law School in San Antonio.  I received my juris doctorate degree in May 1980 and have been a practicing attorney since then.

I want you to know that I’m a longtime supporter of Trinity and highly recommend you get involved in some way with the school and the San Antonio community.  There are so many opportunities to get involved and make a difference in someone’s life.  You will build lasting friendships as well as a network of people who can help you as you move forward to achieve your career goals.

Trinity is the source of a lot of great memories for me.  I hope it is and will be for you.  Let’s build some memories together.

Once again, I am thrilled to be your 2016 Alumni Sponsor.  If you have any questions or just need to talk, feel free to call me at 210-771-0030 or e-mail me at kpettit@satx.rr.com.

Upper-class students may move into the residence halls beginning on Sunday, August 24. The Witt Center will be open for check-in from 8:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, August 27.   In order to accommodate our returning students, the Residential Life Office opens the residence halls on a weekend day (for family travel purposes) and allows for three days to arrive to campus.  Given that, we ask that you do not request to arrive earlier than that time, as such requests will be denied.  Please allow the staff to focus on checking in new students and the start of New Student Orientation.  We appreciate your cooperation.
