December 2014

Hello 2016-ers!

First of all:  Just Three More Weeks!  Keep reminding yourself:  Just Three More Weeks!

Now, as you approach the ‘home-stretch’ of the semester, I am sure that you have a lot of demands upon your time.  You have exams, papers, and presentations to research and prepare, you’ve just gone through pre-registration for the spring semester, and you are beginning to explore summer internships, graduate schools, and the various specializations in your majors.  And right in the middle of all of this, you have Thanksgiving beak!

For many of you, this is probably a time to drop your responsibilities (even if only for a day or so) and reconnect with friends and family.  In addition to the more general things that you normally give thanks for—your life, family, friends, and health—I’m going to ask you to consider your time here at Trinity.

You may not want to acknowledge this at this particular moment, with deadlines and library books piling up around you, but ... MORE >>

*   IT’S A WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR   *

It sure has been cold the past few days!!!  Winter will be here soon and we might get tagged with another “polar vortex”.  How do people north of Dallas handle all the cold weather?  My daughter lives in Interlochen, Michigan and said that it probably won’t be above freezing until March or April of next year.  But the cold won’t last too long here because this is Texas.  One thing for sure is that you can count on it being cold when the rodeo comes to town in February.

Thanksgiving is just days away.  I hope you spend time with your family and friends, enjoy some great food and be thankful for all your blessings. Christmas will be here before you know it, but there are some things you must to do before then... More >>

Hello Juniors! It’s finally getting chilly out, so grab some hot chocolate and snuggle into a nice spot for the rest of the semester!

There are many wonderful things coming up for students in the next few weeks, and a lot of them are Trinity traditions! Sunday, December 7th is a particularly busy day! It starts out with the Rock n’ Roll Marathon making its way through campus. Be sure to show your #TigerPride to all of the runners, and pick up your free t-shirt in Coates during the week! That same day at 6pm will be the Christmas Vespers service. Join the Trinity community in song as you sing by the light of candles.

Keep your stomachs still hungry after Thanksgiving, because... MORE>>

Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and Kayla Mire Food Drive
For the second straight year the course for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon winds through Trinity. Please come out on Sunday, December 7 from 8-10 a.m. and show your Tiger Pride! The 20,000 runners loved the Trinity leg of the race last year and the Trinity runners REALLY appreciated the warm reception. This is a huge event for Trinity and is a great opportunity to show our spirit to a huge crowd!

Please also support the charity of the Trinity runners virtually or by making a donation to the Kayla Mire Food Drive the Coates Center December 1-5. By giving food items or Tiger Bucks -- in any amount -- you will receive a special spirit shirt to wear on race day. (Click here to learn more directly the connection between the food drive and our Dean of Students Half Marathon Challenge running group.)

Career Services:
A Holiday Party with a Purpose

Want an easily accomplished New Year’s Resolution that will help you this year—and the next, and the next, and maybe even lifelong? Attend one of the 14 Making Connections events being held in major cities throughout Texas and the United States between January 7 and 10. Meet alumni and ask for advice. Ask them how they got to where they are today and what steps they took to get there, such as:
·         Which professors in their major mentored them or collaborated on research projects with them?
·         How many internships did they land? How did they search for and secure these experiences?
·         Did they conduct any informational interviews with professionals working in the same field of interest?
These are examples of some easy questions you can ask in a relaxed atmosphere while meeting people who want to help you. Cross off one New Year’s Resolution and begin building valuable (possibly lifelong) relationships. Consider Making Connections a holiday party with a purpose. Put it on your list.
