Hello
2016-ers!
Whew! We’re close to the end of your sophomore
year. I know that I don’t need to nag
you about pacing yourselves and your schedules to have a sane and healthy exam
period. I am sure that you will drag out
your calendars, look up all of your exams, papers, presentation and portfolio
deadlines, work backwards from the dates, plot in your study hours, healthy
meals and sufficient sleep to get you through this challenging period, right? Right!
What I
would like to discuss with you is your upcoming summer. A number of you are beginning to contemplate
majors, internships, Study Abroad, etc., for the coming year. This may the last ‘free’ summer vacation that
many of you will have the pleasure of enjoying.
I recognize that you may have summer jobs and other obligations, but
compare to your schedule during the last few weeks of the school year at
Trinity, your summer work schedule will probably be a piece of cake!
I am
encouraging you to take advantage of this special time. By that, I do not mean just sleeping, eating,
and watching mom wash your clothes. I do
mean, read all of those novels that you put aside to finish your homework,
watch those movies and television shows on Netflix (I am particularly fond of
setting a Saturday aside to catch up on a whole season of Game of Thrones or
Elementary) that you heard about all year, go swimming or play volleyball with
friends, go hiking and let some sun (not too much!) give your face a healthy
glow, sit and listen to your parents reminisce with their peers and learn some
family history/gossip. Of course, some
healthy eating and sleeping wouldn’t go amiss, either….
I know that
regardless of your work ethic, getting through a semester/year at Trinity is no
walk in the park. While it would be
fabulous to be able to stop and smell the roses throughout the year, it isn’t
always possible. However, this summer,
try to do yourself, your mental and physical health, and your school career a
favor: take this summer to take a break,
relax hard and enjoy your life! Then
come back in August rejuvenated and refreshed, ready to attack your junior
year.
Cheers,
Dr. M
