SO MUCH TO DO
Congratulations! You are about half-way through, and the end
of the semester is almost in sight.
Finals will be here before you know it, and the holidays are just around
the corner. Soon some of you will begin
to travel home or elsewhere to see family and friends. But, there is so much to do!!! Not only for school, but for the holidays as
well.
Believe it or not, it is not too soon
to start thinking about finals and getting ready for them. I know about "dead week" or the
"reading period", which is the week before finals start. But, why "cram" everything into a week
when you have the opportunity right now to calmly review everything you have
studied so far this semester? Assess
your current situation. How are you
really doing in class? Do you have
everything under control? Do you need to
join a study group? Get a tutor? Talk with your professor? What do you need to do in order to do well on
your exams?
And then there are all the things you
need to do for the holidays. What
arrangements do you need to make to go home for the holidays? Are you driving, flying, taking the bus or
train? Do you need to make
reservations? Is anyone going with
you? When do you plan to leave and
return? What presents should you get for
your family and friends? Do you need to
get a job over the holidays?
There are many cultural and holiday
events in and around San Antonio, including Diwali San Antonio/Festival of
Lights (11/1), El Dia de los Muertos (11/2), Wurstfest (11/7-16 in New
Braunfels - www.wurstfest.com), Light the Way at the University of the
Incarnate Word (11/22), the Holiday River Parade and Lighting Ceremony (11/28),
and lots of events involving tamales. Go
to www.visitsanantonio.com for more details.
The holidays are times when we should
be especially thankful for all our blessings - family, friends, health, church,
opportunities, education. Just as each
of us has been blessed, we can be a blessing to others. Think about how you can help someone
else. Volunteer to serve food at the
Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner (www.rauljimenezdinner.com), the San Antonio
Food Bank or as a big brother or sister.
There are plenty of opportunities. Pick one.
On a light-hearted note, check out the

In my last letter, I asked you to
answer the question "Where is your favorite place on campus?". I hope you made the time to answer that
question and to put your answer in a place where you can find it later. You will understand why when graduation
arrives. This month's question is
"What do you remember the most as a first year student"? I would really like to know your answers, so
please forward them to me at kpettit@satx.rr.com.
I look forward to being with you
soon. Call me at (210) 771-0030 if you
have any questions or just need to talk.
